Cognitive Intervention

By Tony Egbuna Ford

With the minds of our youth. It should be understood that their ability to make choices, is not limited. But, it should also be understood that they make choices, as young boys and girls often without enough correct information. Another thing that should be understood is that a lot of choices our youth make will be mistakes, often not in their best interest. Society would have us believe that our youth should make choices as adults, and as such should bear adult consequences for those choices made with the mind of someone young.

How can we encourage our youth to make proper choices and at the same time, if they make mistakes, not hold them an adult standard of consequences? Ultimately, what we should all want is for our youth to find a way to make decisions that is positive and empowering. To have them, through their choices, find their voice.

A voice where they can say NO(!) to those negative things they may see inside their homes, neighborhoods and social environments like school. When our youth are not empowered to make positive choices - where they believe that giving in to peer pressure is a better choice than walking away from a negative situation. We fail them, and we see the results of this is poor schooling, trouble making, acting out, joint gangs, doing Drugs and Alcohol, going into juvenile facilities, etc,.

All things which makes it difficult for them to correct later in life. So, we empower our youth now. Help them understand how to make proper choices that will help them steer clear of the negative consequences that society will hold them to. Here, tools will be provided.
